What to do if you're given a counterfeit bank note

Following the release of the new £50 note, the Bank of England has released free training materials for businesses so that you and your staff know what to do if you find a counterfeit bank note.

Watch the video below to find out more.

What to do if you've been handed a counterfeit note:

  • Knowingly holding onto, or passing couterfeit notes is illegal.
  • Make sure all employees understand your company policy regarding counterfeit notes and know what to say to customers.
  • If you feel at risk, give the note back to the customer and ask for another form of payment. If you suspect the customer is purposefully trying to pass a counterfeit note, call the police, and if you have kept the note hand it over to them.
