Black Friday 2022, what’s the alternative?

Black Friday 2022, what’s the alternative?

As Black Friday looms this week, the pressure from the media for consumers to take part shows no signs of slowing.  Despite the rising cost of living, the promise of big discounts from large retailers is enticing in the run-up to the holiday season.

It goes without saying that this pressure, now more than ever affects independent retailers across the UK. The expectation to offer Black Friday discounts are high, but the incentives can be low with the current rises in inflation and energy prices.

We recently conducted a survey asking our members to share their thoughts on Black Friday, and whether they know of any alternatives. A resounding majority told us no, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to bring attention to a great initiative you can take part in.

This year, Bira is supporting ‘Colour Friday’, a national campaign started in 2021 by UK Ambassador for Creative Small Businesses, Holly Tucker MBE. Targeting consumers to support independent retailers rather than partaking in Black Friday sales, nearly 2,800 small businesses and consumers have listed their support so far.

Holly offers a wide range of resources and content to small businesses via her website, including weekly Monday Motivation webinars, the last one taking place next Monday 28th November.
