Bira urges the Chancellor to address the shrinking economy to help independent high street businesses.

The British Independent Retailers Association has said the economy shrinking has not been a surprise to retailers and has urged for urgent action by the government.

The announcement today that the UK appears to be heading into recession after the latest official figures showing the economy shrank between July and September.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of BIRA said: "The fact the economy is shrinking is not a surprise to retailers as they have seen sales fall as shoppers reduce their spending.

"The Autumn statement takes on even greater significance and we urge the Chancellor to not only address public finances, but also give some optimism to hard pressed retailers. Economic growth is needed to come out of recession and businesses can provide that with the right  support. There is a real fear that business costs, especially business rates, may well increase next year and that will be a hammer blow to the high streets."
